Spirit of Burnewood
Burnewood Community's motto is "Life is Good in Burnewood" and it's hard for the majority of us to disagree with this statement. We have great schools, plenty of green space for recreation and a strong community spirit that provides a safe environment for our children to thrive in. There are still some opportunities, howerever, that are beyond the reach of some of our families. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to have a healthy and active life! To help achieve this goal, the League has established a Program Sponsorship Initiative called the "Spirit of Burnewood". This initiative will allow children from families who have limited financial resources to participate in sports and recreational activities.Art Classes:
Instructed by: Umberto Micelli (780-991-5289 or miceliu@shaw.ca)People don't think twice about private music, swimming, dance and gymnastics lessons. Why not private art lessons?
Help your child develop his/her talents in the visual arts.
Classes are offered to the grade 3-6, committed elementary school child serious about wanting to further develop his/her talents in the visual arts. Participants will receive high-quality instruction exploring fundamentals in drawing, sculpture, painting and fun, and miscellaneous art projects. Plenty of demonstration and step-by-step instruction will be provided to help students develop an awareness of how to create realistic and interesting art compositions they will enjoy.
Basketball
Instructed by: Donny LaweEach week, students aged 9 - 14 learn important fundamentals to the game. In addition to learning basic skills such as dribbling, passing, and basic footwork, the students participate in exciting and challenging drills and scrimmages. Two overarching essentials to our practices are working hard and having fun. We run 2 programs: one in fall and one in spring.
Cost varies depending on the length of the program which is based on the amount of gym time the city allows us to have.

Karate Do
Instructed by: Chris Eckert (780-465-0581 or http://www.japankaratedo-edmonton.com/ )The Burnewood Community League karate program offers traditional instruction in the Japanese martial art of karate. The program is open to people of all ages and combines elements from the three traditional styles originating from the Okanawa region in Japan. The word karate translates as 'empty hand' and perfectly expresses the philosophy of karate - self-defense.
Students are taught the importance of both mental and physical discipline, as well as perseverance. Combined with a great workout and the opportunity to compete at organized events, karate teaches many skills that are directly transferable to every-day life, working under pressure being a perfect example.
Our instructor, Chris Eckert is a fourth degree black belt and has been practicing karate since 1978. Chris started the BCL karate program in 1996, not long after moving in to the Burnewood community, and has seen it grow significantly during the past 10 years. He is a certified instructor with Genbukai Canada. In order to ensure that his teaching skills remain at their peak, Chris attends regular training sessions in Canada, the US, and in Japan.
