Park Rejuvenation Project
The Project
Julia Kiniski Park is located next to the Burnewood Community Hall. This park has the potential to become an attractive, all-season, community gathering place that appeals to all age groups. Currently, our aging playground is in a state of disrepair, with much of the equipment removed for safety reasons. The overall park is not well designed to meet the needs of our diverse community, and lacks appeal for a variety of age groups. The Needs Assessment
We conducted a survey of our community's needs in the fall of 2007. Our citizens envisioned a park with a colorful, exciting playground, benches, family picnic areas, walking and biking trails, calm garden spaces, water play, and areas for older children. Due to the extensive nature of these requests, we expect our park to evolve over time, in two to three phases. The image shown here was created by a City of Edmonton landscape architect. It is based on our needs assessment results and consultation with our Park Rejuvenation committee. It shows the features we plan to include in the first phase of development:
- rebuilt playground
- correction of site drainage
- pathways and bike bumps
- skateboard path
- shade structure and picnic tables
- walkway lighting and benches
The Cost
We estimate that the first phase of park development will cost $457 000. We are currently applying for government and private grants and are fundraising in our community. In order to build in summer 2009, we need to raise $157 000 over the coming year.
